Titel:  "Horn" Panther

Hello tankers,

I hope it's OK by writing this in English as my Dutch is really awful
Since 2 years now my 1:15th scale Panther kit of the limited-lot production from Markus Horn is waiting here to be built, now at last I started building it and would like to give you some impression of this beautiful and uncommon model in this scale.
I decided building an "Early A" version what just makes some minor differences to the kits' version.
The kit itself is highly engineered with Aluminium lower hull, Aluminium road wheels with rubber tyres, metal tracks premounted and comes with the entire components, what makes it a kit to be built right out of the box.
Anyway, I am always looking for some extra detailing.
Hope you enjoy this.
The Panther should look like this Original when finished one time:

Starting with the suspension and the sprocket wheels, where the sprocket cover is fastened with 1mm screws instead of being glued:

The transmission cover is rebuild and added, besides the 2 bolts on the front end of the hull were usually used to fasten the mud flap extension of the D & A versions:

Followed by the back panel, where I also decided to screw the components instead of glueing them to the hull:

Newly designed exhaustpipes bent with the help of sand filling and heat:

Shackles secured by 1mm splinter pins:

The back panels' nearly finished layout:

After this I cared for the details on the turret, starting with the commanders' copula, where I added some weld seams by using "magic sculp":

And the commanders' direct sight:

Some handles and the fully workable safety locker for the escape hatch are fitted:

After fitting the main gun with the elevation device like shown in the manual, the turret was nearly finished, so I spent some effort on the superstructure of the Panther. The tool racks fitted to the starboard sides are moulded within the upper hull. So I decided to design them completely new by using brass and copper material. The left tool rack prior to soldering:

...and after soldering in comparison to the kits' moulded version:

The Panther at present status:

So, that's it for now and what the model looks like this morning and I think it still will take minimum 1 more year before I'll get this thing finished.
Hope you'll like this, eventhough I write in English- and if so, I would like to keep you informed and updated from time to time.
Critical comments are always welcome.
Have a nice sunday.
Cheers
Uwe

Uwe, that looks very very good! Keep us updated on your progress!

Hello Uwe,

Looks great, thanks for the bending tip (sand).

Can you tell me something more about this infrared device you are showing on the RC-Panzerboard. :?:

Hi Theo,

thanks for the compliments. Concerning your question:
The infrared nightfigthing device was devloped and released in late war '45. A Panther company mainly Ausf. "G"s, employed at the eastern front (prussia) incl. some Sdfkz 251 armored halftrack had been equipped with these nightfighting devices and fought with major success, because until that time, none of the allied states had been able to catch up a target by night.
So, it was a negative surprise, when the Panther fought their night battles.
Anyhow, war was nearly over :D
Because of the infrared battle unit device from Tamiya, I built a thing like mentioned above to cover this battle units' transmitter diode instead of installing it onto the main gun of the Kingtiger.
This is the original copy of that device fitted to the Panther "G" in Koblenz:

Because of that I found it interesting to rebuild a thing like this, being fitted to my King, eventhough, historically a total desaster I found it as a special appearance, somehow :D .

So this is, what it looks like, when I scratch built it for my King and fitted it with the Tamiya IR diode of the battle unit:

Now, as I am building my Panther, I will use it for this model in the future, as, from historical point of view, it is more comprehensible.
Hope I could be of help with this information:

cheers
Uwe

Hello Uwe,

That looks very nice!
Does the infrared device move up and down when you move the barrel up and down?
Very clever! This is the best way to install the IR led from the battle unit I have yet seen.

Hallo Uwe,
das ist ja Unheimlich.
Die Hare gehen mir Steil stehen.

Sie viel detail an einem modell, sogar miniatur Flügelmuttern.

Die finding mit das IR modul ist einfach Wahnsinnig.

Gruss,
Jan

Hello to all,

I highlight this thread once again, just announcing that there will be a fully detailed article of the build of my Panther in the next issue No. 19 of MMI beginning of October:

Hi Uwe,

Can you show us at least a few photo's from our Panther? I'm really curious how it turned out. And the photo in your announcement is prety small. Better yet, are ou and your Panther joining us at the meeting in Arnheim next Sunday?

Herzalichen Gruss,
Rob
